How To Survive Japan’s Rainy Season: The Ultimate Tsuyu Guide

Tokyo in September: What To Expect

The Japanese word to know for September is zansho (lingering heat) and it describes the first half of the month accurately. On paper September averages a high of 26.4°C (80°F) and a low of 20.6°C (69°F), but those numbers are pulled down by the back end of the month. Early September in Tokyo can still see days above 30°C (86°F) well into the month. Humidity stays around 80%.

September is peak typhoon season and one of Tokyo’s wettest months. More typhoons make landfall in Japan in September than in any other month, according to Japan Meteorological Agency records. A direct hit on Tokyo is uncommon, but the effects are not: cancelled flights, suspended trains, closed outdoor attractions and shuttered festivals often happen most Septembers. Expect to be flexible with your itinerary.

September has two public holidays — Respect for the Aged Day on the third Monday and the Autumnal Equinox around the 22nd or 23rd — and in years when the calendar puts them close enough together, the day between them becomes a holiday too. The result is a five-day run known as Silver Week, and when it happens it behaves like a smaller Golden Week: domestic travel surges, shinkansen reserved seats sell out and hotel rates jump. It doesn’t happen every year, so check the calendar for the year you’re traveling.

Ami de Paris: Japanese Artists in Paris

In the 1920s, Paris was the undisputed capital of the art world, drawing over 200 Japanese painters, writers and intellectuals into its bustling bohemian scene. Though World War II forced most to return home, many returned in the postwar years to re-immerse themselves in the city’s creative recovery. The exhibition traces this profound cross-cultural dialogue through a collection-focused survey named after Amis de Paris, the journal published by a Paris-alumni social club formed in 1930.

Picasso, Through the Eyes of Paul Smith

Pablo Picasso never settled into a single way of seeing. He moved restlessly — from the deep blues of grief to the splintered geometry of cubism, into ceramics, sculpture, theater and the unflinching protest of “Guernica.”This exhibition looks at all of that through an unexpected lens. British designer Paul Smith, drawing on the collection of the Musée national Picasso-Paris, has designed the layout himself — and the result is full of color and small, delightful surprises. Around 80 works, including “Portrait of a Man” from the Blue Period and “Paul as Harlequin,” unfold in a loose, easy chronology rather than a strict progression. It builds on “Picasso Celebration: The Collection in a New Light!” — the 2023 Paris show marking 50 years since the artist’s death — now traveling internationally, reimagined here as a space that feels playful, personal and alive.

Nam June Paik: The 20th Anniversary of his Passing

Long before smartphones, AI or even color TV were household realities, Korean artist Nam June Paik (1932–2006) was already using monitors, cameras and electronic signals to rethink what art could be. Marking two decades since the media art pioneer’s passing, Watarium is taking a deep look back at his legacy.

Marie Antoinette Style Exhibition

Centuries after her death, Marie Antoinette remains one of history’s ultimate fashion icons. Organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and making its Japan debut at the Yokohama Museum of Art, this major retrospective is a must for fashion lovers. It gathers roughly 200 items, including garments, precious jewelry, portraits, furniture and personal effects with deep historical provenance, looking at how the queen revolutionized royal taste and continues to inspire modern designers. Many of the personal items on display carry dramatic histories of survival. Chief among them are the “Sutherland Diamonds” from the infamous 1785 “Affair of the Diamond Necklace” that apparently ruined the queen’s reputation irrevocably. You’ll also see modern reinterpretations of her image, like Oscar-winning costumes from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006) and runway pieces like Jeremy Scott’s silicone cake dresses for Moschino from 2020. We recommend reserving a timeslot in advance and going on a weekday, as the exhibition has been a huge hit among locals and tourists.

Tada Minami: ‘Still, Shimmering Light’

A pioneer of postwar Japanese abstract art, Minami Tada (1924–2014) spent nearly seven decades challenging the idea that sculpture should be heavy, static or bound to traditional gallery spaces. This comprehensive survey gathers roughly 70 pieces spanning her extensive career, from early paintings to her iconic “lighting sculptures” and architectural installations. It’s a must-see retrospective for design lovers, highlighting how she bridged fine art, product design and urban architecture, bringing beauty to public spaces across Japan.

Adrian Sherwood Presents: Dub Sessions 2026

This September, Adrian Sherwood’s Dub Sessions returns to Japan for a high-profile collaboration featuring Warp Records mainstay Nightmares on Wax. The tour centers on the creative dialogue between the two artists following the release of In A Space Outta Dub — Sherwood’s complete deconstruction of the classic Nightmares on Wax album, In A Space Outta Sound. This technical and stylistic crossover brings together George Evelyn’s soul-drenched production with Sherwood’s legendary "On-U Sound" dub mixing, marking a rare joint appearance at Tokyo’s O-EAST (Sept 9) and Osaka’s META VALLEY (Sept 10).The performance serves as both a 20th-anniversary celebration of Evelyn’s formative work and an exploration of modern dub evolution. By stripping back the jazz and hip-hop layers of the original tracks to their rhythmic foundations, Sherwood provides a stark, experimental contrast to the smooth grooves Nightmares on Wax is known for. Tickets are available starting April 1 via the Beatink organizer pre-sale for 8,000 yen. For fans of the UK underground, this represents a significant meeting of two producers who have spent three decades defining their respective genres.
