This special exhibition celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Shinagawa Aquarium, and the 50th anniversary of the Japanese-language publication of Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
The “Clownfish Room,” decorated in a style evoking Carle’s picture-book art, features an “Art and Color” corner exploring the secrets behind various animals’ vivid colors and unusual patterns. The “Mimicry and Observation” corner showcases how the animals skillfully blend into their surroundings. In the “Art and Color” corner, visitors can compare the vivid palette of Carle’s collage work with equally vivid creatures, celebrating the richness of color and the individuality of each species.
Tank displays are accented with decorative panels using Carle’s illustrations and explanatory panels about the animals. Limited-edition menu items and merchandise themed around “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” will also be sold throughout the aquarium.
