Scientifically Exploring Sexual Diversity
The “Sex in Nature” exhibition is the first exhibit at the National Museum of Nature and Science that focuses on the theme of “sex.” The exhibit explores the science behind diverse forms and mechanisms of sexuality in living organisms.
Sex is not limited to humans but is found in all living things. Many living things have males and females, and offspring are produced when the sperm and eggs meet. However, the “form,” “mechanism” and “behavior” of sex are surprisingly diverse and differ greatly from one living thing to another. For example, there are cases when living things go through sex changes during development, and living things whose sex is determined by environmental factors such as temperature.
This exhibition will take a close look at morphology, behavior, sex determination and child-rearing — asking, what does “sex” mean to living things?
