Thought Takes Physical Form

HVEN Gallery’s latest exhibition will welcome Tokyo-based visual artist and sculptor Tania Herman.

“Overthinkers” is an ongoing figurative sculptural project exploring doubt, anxiety and the tension of living with uncertainty. The exhibition examines a state in which endless possibilities produce intense inner conflict, while externally the body can appear suspended in inaction.

Doubt multiplies possible outcomes, creating conflicting impulses, imagined consequences, internal arguments, revisions and repeated attempts to find certainty where certainty may not exist. What appears from the outside as stillness can therefore conceal an intensely active psychological state.

Rather than illustrating particular thoughts, Herman’s sculptures attempt to give physical form to the condition of thinking itself and to the tension that emerges when thought cannot arrive at resolution. Through variations in form, posture, surface and spatial positioning, “Overthinkers” explores uncertainty as a state of suspension between thought and action.

Tania Herman was born in 1981 and is a Tokyo-based visual artist of Russian origin whose practice focuses on sculpture. She began her art education in academic drawing and painting during early childhood.

The exhibition will run from October 8 to October 30, with an opening reception on October 8 from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
