Contemporary Ukiyo-e Exhibition

Step into the vibrant world of ukiyo-e, where centuries-old craftsmanship meets modern creative vision. This extraordinary exhibition celebrates the legacy of Japanese woodcut printing, an art form born in the Edo period that continues to evolve.

From the legendary works of Sharaku, Utamaro and Hokusai to today’s contemporary interpretations, the intricate process of woodcut printing — using mountain cherry woodblocks, washi paper, and water-based pigments — has been preserved and passed down through generations of skilled artisans.

Now, in a powerful fusion of past and present, 85 contemporary artists including Antony Gormley, Kiki Smith, Lee Ufan and Chris Ofili breathe new life into ukiyo-e, imagining new horizons for the traditional art form.
