Make a Custom Pair of Geta Sandals

In celebration of Gujo Odori, an iconic summer dance festival held in Gifu Prefecture, guests staying at Fairfield by Marriott Gifu Gujo are invited to a hands-on workshop to make their very own odori geta (traditional dancing sandals) with a local geta maker.

The event will be held on July 30, exclusively for Fairfield guests. The event is the latest campaign for the Fairfield by Marriott Roadside Station Project, which encourages travel experiences that explore “the hidden charms of various regions,” using Fairfield hotels as a base. The Gujo Odori, held annually in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, is a traditional event that was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022 and is considered one of Japan’s three major bon odori festivals. Guests will have the opportunity for a deeper connection with the tradition by making their own geta sandals they can also use at the festival.

The workshop will be a collaboration with Gujo Mokuri, a local brand known for its high-quality footwear that is proudly made in Gujo City. Gujo Mokuri is part of every step of the geta-making process, from carving the cypress wood to attaching the straps.

Under the guidance of Yuto Morohashi, a craftsman from Gujo Mokuri, participants will make a one-of-a-kind original pair of dancing geta. Participants will choose their favorite sandal strap from a variety of colorful and diverse patterns, and attach it to the geta. Some straps utilize a silkscreen technique that originated in Gujo, adding an extra layer of local artistry. The geta will then be branded with the guests’ name or additional illustrations with a wood-burning pen. Participants will also receive a Gujo Odori tenugui (hand towel).

This event will be held on the same day the Gujo Odori dance festival takes place, so guests can immediately head out and join in the Gujo Odori dance.

To participate in the workshop, please contact Fairfield by Marriott Gifu Gujo (phone number: 0575-88-3391) after making your accommodation reservation by July 26.
