A Masterpiece Returns to Japan
Van Gogh’s timeless masterpiece, “Café Terrace at Night,” will come to Japan for the first time in 20 years.
The 1888 painting depicts a real cafe in Arles, France and has captivated the world with its vivid colors that truly make the shop’s gas lamps glow against the blue of the night. It also features a starry atmosphere, a motif that also appears in Van Gogh’s beloved “The Starry Night.” “Café Terrace at Night” is one of Van Gogh’s earliest paintings and truly highlights the artist’s creative expression and innovation in depicting a nighttime setting that retains bold color.
The exhibition will additionally focus on other works from the first half of Van Gogh’s life leading up to the creation of “Café Terrace at Night.” This will include other artists’ works, such as pieces from Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, that represent different phases of Van Gogh’s life and his Impressionism influences. The exhibit will showcase a total of 74 artworks.
