A Breathtaking Floral Celebration

See over 3,000 blossoming hydrangea shrubs in full color in the tranquil Hakusan Shrine grounds. Experience the beauty of Japan’s summer season with a wide array of ajisai, or hydrangeas, of various species including Lacecap, Annabelle and Oakleaf Hydrangeas all filling the shrine and surrounding Hakusan park with bursts of blue, pink and purple. The shrine grounds has multiple photogenic spots such as the stone steps and torii gate for beautiful photos with the seasonal blooms. 

Enjoy the hydrangeas, alongside other festival attractions including food stalls, art exhibitions and interactive activities. The food stalls will be selling typical Japanese festival food such as takoyaki, yakisoba and traditional sweets, along with local specialties prepared by popular neighborhood eateries. Local school and community groups will also be performing music, dance and Japanese taiko drumming routines at the Hydrangea Concerts stage. Performances will be hosted on June 7, 8, 14 and 15 from 10:00–17:00 (Saturdays) and 10:00–16:00 (Sundays).

Don’t miss the Hydrangea Mikoshi Parade happening only on June 15 from 10:00 to 12:00, where a mikoshi (mobile shrine) decorated with hydrangeas will be carried throughout the shrine area with lively chants.

A unique offering, Hakusan Shrine holds a special ritual for blessings against toothaches. On June 8 and June 15 from 11:00, the first 100 participants will receive a free toothbrush with their blessing.

The Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival dates back to 1984, where it originated as a an effort of community revitalization. Since the, the festival has grown into one of the most popular flower festivals in the Bunkyo area, showcasing the area’s local beauty and community pride. It also adds a spark of optimistic joy during the rainy season.
