This large-scale exhibition traces the careers of shojo manga artists Moto Hagio, Ryoko Yamagishi and Waki Yamato.
Marking the 20th anniversary of The National Art Center, Tokyo, this is the first full-scale shojo manga (comics primarily targeting a young female audience) exhibition held at a national art museum in Japan, covering roughly 60 years of creative work across the three artists. The venue displays vivid color illustrations, original artwork from iconic scenes and rare material revealing each artist’s creative process, offering a look at each artist’s distinct appeal, from fantastical storytelling and historically and culturally grounded work to deeply drawn inner lives.
Through the works on display, visitors can trace the rich modes of expression shojo manga has opened up and how the genre has evolved over time.
