This exhibition centers on Toyotomi Hidenaga, the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and protagonist of the 2026 NHK “taiga” drama, NHK’s annual year-long historical drama television series.
Rare historical materials examine Hidenaga’s life, a figure who has drawn relatively little attention until now, alongside his many contributions supporting his brother Hideyoshi’s unification of Japan.
Also on display are materials and objects connected to figures closely tied to the Toyotomi family, including Oda Nobunaga, whom the brothers served; Tokugawa Ieyasu, who later submitted to Hideyoshi; senior retainers Kuroda Kanbei and Todo Takatora; tea master Sen no Rikyu, who supported the Toyotomi regime culturally; and Kodai-in, Hideyoshi’s principal wife, who witnessed the Toyotomi family’s downfall.
Rare cultural artifacts connected to Hidenaga are on display, including a tea caddy, the only surviving item confirmed to have belonged to him.
