A New Way of Experiencing Hanami
This spring, select installations at teamLab Planets transform into luminous cherry blossom environments, offering a digital take on Japan’s beloved sakura season. From March 1 to April 30, two of the museum’s most iconic works fill with blooming cherry blossoms that grow, drift and scatter across immersive spaces.
One highlight is Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers, a massive, immersive dome where a constantly evolving cosmos of flowers envelopes the entire space. Visitors can sit or lie down beneath the projection as blossoms bloom, fall and regenerate in real time, cycling through the flowers of each season. During the spring cycle of the artwork, the space is filled with delicate sakura, surrounding visitors in a seemingly endless cascade of pink petals.
Another seasonal transformation takes place in Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People – Infinity, an interactive installation where visitors walk barefoot through shallow water as luminous koi glide across the surface. The fish respond to the presence of people in the water, altering their paths as they swim. In spring, the koi turn into cherry blossoms as they swim across the infinite water surface. When they encounter a visitor, they burst into cherry blossoms and disperse. The water turns into a pastel pink watercolor painting, enveloping guests in a sakura-colored world.
Together, the artworks create a fleeting, immersive hanami experience, where cherry blossoms bloom endlessly in a digital landscape that changes with every visitor’s movement.
