On Wednesday, an article in the weekly tabloid Shukan Bunshun reported that Toshiba conducted business activities on Little Saint James, the small private island in the United States Virgin Islands that was owned by American financier and convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein until his death in 2019. The Japanese company reportedly installed renewable energy equipment on the island. Dozens of documents confirming this can be found in the Epstein files. According to the report, Toshiba exchanged multiple phone calls and emails with Epstein’s side between 2012 and 2013.
Toshiba Refrains From Commenting on the Epstein Files
In February 2013, it sent a 19-page proposal document to Epstein’s team. There is no verified evidence that the company was involved in or supported the American’s criminal conduct based on those documents. Responding to the report, Toshiba said, “We are currently verifying the facts and will refrain from commenting.” The Shukan Bunshun also plans to provide details of the contents of an email sent to Epstein by Joichi Ito, president of the Chiba Institute of Technology, the oldest private technical university in Japan.
The Epstein files are a collection of millions of documents, images and videos detailing the criminal activities of the disgraced financier. Last month, the US government released millions of new files from its investigation into Epstein. A number of high-profile public figures were mentioned in the files, including US President Donald Trump, Tesla founder Elon Musk and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, Duke of York. The inclusion of a name in the files, however, does not imply wrongdoing by that person.
Jeffrey Epstein and Little Saint James
A 70-acre private island in the Caribbean, Little Saint James was purchased by Epstein in April 1998. Commonly referred to as Epstein Island, it is widely documented as a central location for a sex-trafficking operation involving underage girls. Multiple women testified that they were recruited or transported to the island to be sexually abused by Epstein. In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of soliciting prostitution from a minor. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but only served around 13.
He was arrested again in July 2019 on federal charges for the sex trafficking of minors in Florida and New York. The following month, he was found dead in his jail cell. The medical examiner ruled that he hanged himself, though there has been significant public skepticism about the cause of death. In 2021, British former socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, an associate of Epstein, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of child sex trafficking and other offenses.
