Onigiris Come Head to Head
Tokyo Midtown will hold an onigiri contest from July 17 to August 31 at its three locations in Roppongi, Hibiya and Yaesu. The event will feature a collection of 40 unique rice balls created by 36 different shops.
Onigiri is an iconic Japanese food and an everyday staple. While a comforting and humble dish, it can also be elevated with a wide variety of bold flavors, toppings and more. Onigiri has recently also been gaining attention as a “Taipa gourmet” (“time performance,” meals that offer high satisfaction and efficiency) food that provides easy nutrition.
In addition to classic onigiri, the contest offers luxurious and uniquely arranged onigiri created exclusively for this event will also be available. Varieties include Hal Yamashita Tokyo’s seas urchin and salmon roe tempura onigiri, Orangé’s fried risotto rice ball with truffle cream, Boston Seafood Place’s pan-seared tilefish and risotto onigiri, Phuket Oriental’s gapao onigiri, Po-Tama’s bitter melon tempura onigiri and more. During the event, guests can vote for the most “Instagram-able Onigiri” category and the “Favorite Onigiri” category. Voting panels will be installed at the three venues. Guests can also vote for the most “Instagram-able Onigiri” category online through the official website. The winning onigiri are scheduled to be resold after the event ends.

There will also be an onigiri stamp rally during the contest period. Guests who purchase eligible products will receive one stamp. Those who collect stamps from two oe more locations will receive an original “voting certificate” sticker.
