Japan’s latest anti-bear defense isn’t a hunter or a fence, but a solar-powered robotic wolf measuring 65 centimeters long and 50 centimeters tall. Released by Hokkaido company Ohta Seiki Co. in 2016, the “Super Monster Wolf” was designed to scare away wildlife. The product is now in high demand amid a sharp rise in bear sightings and attacks.

According to Ohta Seiki president Yuji Ohta, the company has already received around 50 orders in 2026 — more than it would typically receive in an entire year. “We make them by hand,” said Ohta. “We cannot make them fast enough now and are asking customers to wait two to three months.”

How the Super Monster Wolf Works

Described as an “eco-friendly wildlife repellent device,” the Super Monster Wolf uses motion sensors, flashing LED lights and more than 50 “threatening sounds.” Covered in realistic-looking fur, it features huge white fangs and flashing red eyes that light up when an animal approaches. The robot also emits loud howling noises audible up to 1 kilometer away.

Able to turn its head from side to side, the robot creates the impression of a prowling predator. More than 380 units have already been sold, mostly to farmers, local municipalities, golf course operators and people working outdoors in rural areas. Ohta Seiki is now developing new versions equipped with wheels.

Japan’s Growing Bear Problem

The growing demand reflects increasing concern over bear encounters nationwide. In fiscal 2025, the country recorded 50,776 Asian black bear sightings. That was the highest figure on record and more than double the previous high of 24,348 in fiscal 2023. The year also saw 13 fatalities. The Environment Ministry attributed the surge to poor food harvests and a growing bear population.

Japan’s first fatal bear attack of 2026 was confirmed in April after a 55-year-old woman was found dead with claw injuries in Iwate Prefecture. Around the same time, a police officer was mauled by a bear while searching for a missing person in the mountains. The 1.3-meter-long bear was killed by a hunter assisting the search team.
