If you’ve spent any time in Minato Mirai, you know its skyline is iconic — but the real soul of the district is where the city meets the sea. And Yokohama Hammerhead is unlike anything else on the waterfront. Opened in 2019 on Shinko Pier, it is Japan’s first complex to combine an international cruise ship terminal, a luxury hotel and a curated collection of dining and retail — all on a working pier surrounded by the sea on three sides.

The result is a place that feels peaceful yet dynamic: on any given day, a towering ocean liner may be docked just outside the window while you eat. Standing guard at the far end of the pier is the historic Hammerhead Crane.

As dusk falls, the second-floor terraces offer a front-row seat to the harbor’s transformation. Watching the sun dip behind the Ferris wheel and skyscrapers as the water begins to shimmer with city lights creates a cinematic atmosphere, making even a casual evening feel like a special occasion.

To help you navigate this seaside destination, we have curated a guide to the standout experiences currently defining the Hammerhead pier, from the highly anticipated arrival of a Michelin-pedigree Thai favorite to artisanal Japanese craft beer and traditional soba.

Award-Winning Thai Food With Waterfront Views

The most compelling reason to wander down to the pier right now is the Japan debut of Baan Phadthai. This establishment brings exemplary Thai cuisine to Yokohama’s waterfront; its Bangkok location has earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand every year the inaugural Michelin Guide Thailand in 2018.

The Bangkok original is housed in a converted shophouse with a vibrant blue exterior and vintage decor. The Yokohama branch brings that same spirit to the second floor of Hammerhead, with a terrace overlooking the sea and the Minato Mirai skyline.

The menu stays true to the brand’s roots, featuring a pad Thai sauce made from 18 ingredients. The signature crab pad Thai is a standout — generously topped with blue swimmer crab, with the shell artfully placed on top for visual impact.

The outdoor terrace is another lovely feature: a dog-friendly space where guests can clink glasses and enjoy high-quality traditional dishes and fragrant desserts while soaking in the panoramic views of the bay.

Other Restaurants To Try at Yokohama Hammerhead

The culinary journey at Hammerhead continues with a diverse array of artisanal experiences. For those craving bold, coastal flavors, Quays Pacific Grill offers an expansive seafood-focused menu. It’s also a haven for craft drink enthusiasts, as the restaurant houses its own on-site brewery, gin distillery and coffee roastery.

Another great choice is Soba Sumire, which offers a refined take on Japanese tradition. The restaurant serves soba with a perfect buckwheat-to-wheat ratio, crafted from the season’s finest domestic flour. The noodles are enhanced beautifully with dashi made from two-year-aged dried thick-cut bonito from Kagoshima.

Here, you can start your meal with sophisticated appetizers designed to be enjoyed with a selection of sake, shochu or seasonal fruit sours. The menu is also elegantly enhanced with Japanese spices like yuzu pepper, sansho pepper, wasabi and chili peppers.

A Sweet Treat to End The Day

Before ending your journey, a visit to Kamakura Beniya’s Kurumicco Factory offers a delightful look into one of the region’s most beloved treats. This space is a celebration of Kurumicco — a homemade caramel packed with walnuts sandwiched between buttery layers of pastry baked to perfection. Through the factory windows, you can watch craftsmen rhythmically assemble these treats.

At the adjacent cafe, you can enjoy the Factory’s Kurumicco Parfait, a sophisticated deconstruction of the treat, or grab a Kurumimi Cup. This cup features the “mimi” (edges) of Kurumicco which contain more pastry than the standard pieces — perfect for lovers of dessert edges.
