The Thrill of ‘Initial D’ in a New Way

Initial D, the street racing manga and anime series that has captivated the world for over 30 years, will have a special exhibition displaying metal canvas art. These rare, limited-edition art pieces use unique metal printing technology that reimagine artist Shuichi Shigeno’s passionate brushstrokes in a new context of contemporary art. GAAAT’s artwork technology uses up to 32 layers of durable metal and and UV paints to create a one-of-a-kind piece that changes in appearance depending on the angle of light.

Shuichi Shigeno debuted as a manga artist in 1981 and started serializing Baribari Densetsu on the coveted Weekly Shonen magazine in 1983, which pioneered the motorcycle boom and brought him the Kodansha Manga Award in 1985. Initial D is credited as one of the biggest franchises that drove the pinnacle of Japan’s world-renowned drift street racing movement. The series has been made into movies, games and inspired countless other international media.

The gallery will be touring around Japan, first stopping in Tokyo from May 28 to June 7, at The Coffee Brew Club Gallery inside Harajuku Harakado. It will then go to Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Yokohama.

Ticket reservation can be made on the official website.
