Against industry giants such as McDonald’s and homegrown favorites like Mos Burger, DomDom Burger is easy to overlook. But it’s actually Japan’s original hamburger chain, beating the golden arches’ debut in Japan by a whole year. And true to its elephant mascot, DomDom isn’t exactly subtle; it has a habit of stomping in with big ideas that are impossible to ignore.

Debuting on March 26, the company’s latest bold creation is an almost all-lettuce burger. Priced at ¥690, it features a heaping mountain of lettuce — about a third of a whole head — which the chain touts as a rich source of dietary fiber.
“As you eat, savor the freshness… it’s a fresh salad burger that’s almost entirely lettuce,” says DomDom’s website.
Rest assured, though, the lettuce burger is not just lettuce between buns. On top of the leaves sits some shrimp for protein.
According to the company, “Finding the plump shrimp among the lettuce feels like discovering a treasure! It will make you happy.” The burger will be available at all DomDom Burger locations for a limited time, while supplies last.

DomDom’s Unconventional Burgers
Contrary to its relatively low-profile marketing strategy, the chain is known for some daring and unconventional sandwich offerings, including the chrysanthemum tempura burger, the Super Sentai burger and the infamous whole fried crab burger.
Released around the same time as the almost all-lettuce burger, the whole tomato burger uses an entire Sayamaru tomato, grown by Japan Post in Nagano Prefecture. The juicy tomato is paired with bacon, basil, cream cheese and a balsamic sauce, making for a messy bite.
DomDom has 27 locations nationwide, five of which are in Tokyo. In 2020, the chain opened a new shop inside Asakusa Hanayashiki, Japan’s oldest amusement park. The Hanayashiki restaurant has a rotating menu, though its karinto steamed buns are only available at the park.
