This season, Tokyo is all about design and aesthetics. If you wish to escape the Halloween event and party madness that’s about to take over our city, head over to Tokyo Midtown to… play?

That’s right. This year, the event’s concept is “enjoying design with all five senses” and there will be plenty of opportunities to not only look at the artifacts, but to also interact and play with them and the different aspects of design.

The Midtown Garden Grass Square will feature a big wooden jungle gym centerpiece, for children and adults alike. It’s a chance to unleash your inner child, climb up on the apparatus and view the world from a slightly different angle. Playground by day and piece of art by night, the jungle gym seems like something of an oasis of fun in the midst of the busy city.

If you’re not as keen on acrobatics and monkey bars, a workshop is offered to create your own accessories and small home interior items. Popular designers will be the instructors of these workshops that are aimed to stimulate the imagination, and children and adults are both welcome – no reservation required.

Other noteworthy events include the Book Truck, which will surely please bookworms and art lovers: a bookstore on wheels will come laden with unusual independent magazines, visual books and picture books. A great lineup of creators and designers will host a talk show at the event’s main space, so drop by whenever you can as admission is free.

Surrounding shops in the nearby Plaza and Galleria will also hold various events, at which visitors will be shown new ideas to incorporate designs into their lives and to make the everyday more colorful and lively.

Tokyo Midtown Design Touch is a good opportunity to appreciate art with all your senses, and also a great family day idea – or even a date.

The best part is perhaps, for some, the fact the event doesn’t require a costume…
