Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia

One of the largest film festivals in Asia returns with hundreds of free screenings across the city during its month-long activities. Covering all genres of short films from around the world beyond narrative and documentary to animation, experimental, fashion and music videos. The 18th edition of Short Shorts Film Festival (SSFF) & Asia will feature close to 250 films including an animated short by Martin Scorsese, the Japanese premiere of 4XD starring Catherine Deneuve and Anna with Emma Stone. This year there are special programs focusing on Danish filmmaking, diversity, international conflict and more. The festival will also include a project called “Cinema Fighters”: a collection of six films produced by Exile’s Hiro and Tetsuya Bessho, the founder of SSFF & Asia. The opening film of the project is Parallel World by Naomi Kawase, who famously won the Cannes Grand Prix in 2007.

At last year’s SSFF & Asia the Grand Prix prize was won by Kristof Deak’s Sing, which went on to take home the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film at the 89th Academy Awards.

Screenings are held at a variety of venues across the city, including Brillia Short Shorts Theater, LaForet Museum, Hikarie Hall A, Omotesando Hills Space O, Andaz Tokyo Andaz Studio and EBISU act*square.
