The biggest mystery in manga history may now lie at the bottom of the ocean, and fans are abuzz with speculation about how to uncover it. Following a recent announcement from One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, fans and online streamers are attempting to locate a glass sphere containing the secret behind the legendary “One Piece” treasure.

Within days of the announcement, fans began analyzing footage from the official video, and several high-profile streamers have hinted they may attempt to search for the secret themselves.

Eiichiro Oda Writes the Secret to the One Piece

The long-running pirate epic One Piece, already the best-selling manga series in history with over 600 million copies in circulation, recently released Volume 114, titled “The God Valley Incident.” The release was accompanied by an official video, revealing that Oda had finally written down the answer to one of manga’s biggest mysteries: What is the One Piece?

According to the video, the answer had always existed in Oda’s mind, but he had never recorded it on paper, until February 8, when he wrote it down for the first time. The page was then placed inside a treasure chest, sealed within a pressure-resistant glass sphere and transported by boat into the ocean.

The orb was dropped 651 meters below sea level, with the project reportedly assisted by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). According to the video, the secret will remain at the bottom of the sea until the manga’s story reaches its conclusion. But of course, the internet isn’t sitting idly by. Fans are treating it as a real-life challenge to take on Luffy’s mission themselves.

Almost immediately after the video was released, netizens began dissecting it frame by frame, trying to determine where the sphere was dropped. Some fans analyzed environmental details in the footage, including sunlight direction, ocean color and boat positioning, to estimate its possible location.

One theory circulating on Reddit suggests the object may have been dropped in Suruga Bay in Shizuoka, a deep coastal area relatively close to Tokyo near where Oda lives. Meanwhile, several online personalities have started discussing the possibility of actually retrieving it.

On March 4, popular streaming star Darren Watkins Jr., better known as IShowSpeed, teased the idea of broadcasting a live search for the hidden secret, hinting that he might try to locate the sphere himself. Other creators have also joined the speculation, discussing potential expeditions and the logistics of reaching the ocean floor.

X user OPHunterTV has written an in-depth estimate of the cost of conducting a deep-sea search of this scale. According to his post, hiring a research vessel and a deep-sea submersible like JAMSTEC’s Shinkai 6500 could cost roughly ¥15 million per day.

Whether any streamer will actually attempt the mission remains uncertain. The location has not been officially disclosed, and reaching depths of more than 600 meters would require highly specialized equipment.

Still, the notion that the answer to one of pop culture’s greatest mysteries could physically exist somewhere at the bottom of the ocean has electrified the manga community. Only time will tell whether the internet will succeed in bringing the secret to the One Piece to the surface.
