Tokyo DisneySea is celebrating its quarter-century milestone this year. The popular theme park, operated by Japan’s Oriental Land Company, begins its anniversary events on April 15. Here’s a comprehensive guide to Tokyo DisneySea, including its evolution and what to expect during the festivities.

The History of Tokyo DisneySea
Tokyo Disney Resort is actually not directly owned by The Walt Disney Company. Instead, its operations are managed by Japan’s Oriental Land Company. And because of this, it truly stands out amongst Disney’s roster of global theme parks with many exclusive attractions, merchandise and menu items that make the park a bucket list destination for many Disney devotees.
The journey to bring Disney magic to Japan was a long but passionate process. Initial proposals date back to 1962 during Walt Disney’s lifetime. However, it wasn’t until 1979 that a formal agreement was signed and construction began. Rather than direct ownership, Japan’s Oriental Land Company secured a licensing agreement to use Disney’s characters and technology.
Japan’s very own Disneyland — the first Disney park outside the United States — opened in 1983 and was an immediate success. While other amusement parks in Japan were seen as catering primarily to children, Tokyo Disneyland drew praise for appealing to visitors of all ages. It was so successful that plans for a second park were announced just five years later.
Fans, though, would have to wait a long time before those plans came to fruition. Tokyo DisneySea eventually opened on September 4, 2001.

It is located along the shores of Tokyo Bay, a coastal backdrop that inspired Tokyo DisneySea’s nautical theming. The park features eight ports: the Mediterranean Harbor, American Waterfront, Port Discovery, Lost River Delta, Arabian Coast, Mermaid Lagoon, Mysterious Island and Fantasy Springs — each with its own myths and legends tied to the sea.

Things You Can Only Find at DisneySea
Tokyo DisneySea offers a range of exclusive experiences that reflect its spirit of exploration. While attractions such as Tower of Terror and Soarin’ can also be found at other Disney parks, the Tokyo versions feature unique storylines and enhanced ride elements.
Instead of a traditional castle, Mount Prometheus rises as the park’s central icon. The volcano emits steam throughout the day and occasionally erupts, sending fireballs into the sky.
The park fully embraces its seaside environment with attractions that operate on the water. You can go on a serene cruise across the harbor on the Transit Steamer Line or be serenaded by gondoliers on the Venetian Gondolas.
DisneySea is also the adopted home of Duffy the Disney Bear, who has become wildly popular in Japan and has grown into the new face of DisneySea.
New characters have been introduced, including ShellieMay, Gelatoni and StellaLou, inspired by different ports in DisneySea. The group has now grown with new mascots from other Disney parks in China and the US, but Tokyo DisneySea remains Duffy’s main hub.

Fantasy Springs
Fantasy Springs is DisneySea’s latest update. The expansion cost a reported ¥320 billion to build, with the 140,000-square-meter area opening in summer 2024. It features new rides, restaurants and a 475-room luxury hotel.
The areas are themed around Tangled, Frozen and Peter Pan, as well as other all-new original attractions to accompany them.
Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival is a romantic boat ride drawn directly from the film’s finale. Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey is adapted from the Orlando park, but takes the experience to another level with advanced animatronics and added scenes that retell the story of Frozen.
The Peter Pan area has two new rides: Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure and Fairy Tinker Bell’s Busy Buggies. Never Land Adventure offers an immersive experience that combines practical sets with 3D effects, while Busy Buggies offers a milder ride that shrinks guests to fairy size.
Along with themed restaurants and stunning rock sculptures, Fantasy Springs is a visually rich addition that can easily soak up your park time just from its beauty.
Mermaid Lagoon
Mermaid Lagoon is one of DisneySea’s most popular photo spots, with pastel coral and sparkling seashells adorning the castle-like entrance.
Its imaginative design continues inside, where guests are meant to feel as though they are diving “under the sea.” The ceilings are designed to resemble water ripples, enhancing the underwater illusion. The indoor area includes play spaces for younger children, as well as a quick-service restaurant.
Raging Spirits
Raging Spirits opened in 2005 as Tokyo DisneySea’s first looping roller coaster. Located in Lost River Delta beside the Indiana Jones attraction, the high-speed ride is designed to resemble the excavated ruins of an ancient archaeological site.
Journey to the Center of the Earth
For those who want to get up close and personal to Mount Prometheus, Journey to the Center of the Earth is a ride set within the volcano.
Inspired by the Jules Verne novel, guests board a subterranean vehicle that travels through underground caverns filled with otherworldly creatures and crystalline formations before plunging down a steep drop at speeds of more than 70 kilometers per hour.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Continuing the Jules Verne theme, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea uses creative special effects to mimic a submarine voyage exploring the lost city of Atlantis. While slow-paced, the ride has some exciting scenes featuring sea monsters and a giant squid.
Sindbad’s Storybook Voyage
Sindbad’s Storybook Voyage in Arabian Coast is another DisneySea original that takes inspiration from classic literature. The attraction is loosely based on the tale of Sinbad the Sailor from One Thousand and One Nights, reimagined as a gentle musical journey.
The ride’s characters, Sindbad and his tiger cub Chandu, have become fan favorites, inspiring merchandise and some park snacks such as the Chandu tail curry-filled steamed bun.
Aquatopia
Aquatopia in Port Discovery is a playful water attraction with a unique boarding system. Guests step directly into their vehicles before the ride begins, as the surrounding water effect creates the sensation of gliding through a splash-filled environment while spinning unpredictably.

Celebrating 25 Years
Tokyo DisneySea’s 25th anniversary event, the “Sparkling Jubilee,” will run from April 15 through March 31, 2027. Below are the new offerings available during the celebration.
S.S. Columbia Jubilee Gala
The highlight of the Sparkling Jubilee is the gala, held inside the luxurious S.S. Columbia ocean liner.
From April 15 to June 30, the S.S. Columbia will be reserved exclusively for event guests. This paid experience (¥19,900 for adults) provides guests with an opulent experience. The gala will bring an array of special menu items including slow-cooked salmon, orange-simmered duck, fig compote, chicken galantine and lobster salad. The Teddy Roosevelt Lounge will serve unlimited soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Attendees will receive an exclusive Mickey and Minnie plush set and a souvenir glass. To purchase gala tickets, guests must register through a MyDisney account and visit the event website for more information.
Attractions and Entertainment
Mediterranean Harbor will host Mickey and his friends for an anniversary greeting. The Sparkling Jubilee Celebration show will feature multiple characters, including Minnie Mouse, Pinocchio, Duffy and LinaBell. The characters will be dressed in special new costumes in signature jubilee teal.
“Dance the Globe” is another all-new entertainment addition. It will include appearances from Rapunzel, in addition to characters such as Hiro from Big Hero 6 and Mirabel from Encanto.
At night, the walls of the Hotel MiraCosta will be transformed with a projection show accompanied by the 25th anniversary theme song.
Food and Drinks
The jubilee offers a range of new food and drink options inspired by the celebration’s whimsical theme. The Mickey macaron, butterfly tea lemonade and apple soda milk mousse are all vibrantly decorated in blue hues to match the celebration.
Other menu items include a Yucatan spicy beef and seafood salsa rice bowl and a hyuganatsu cheesecake, made with a citrus fruit from Miyazaki Prefecture. Cafe Portofino will offer a limited set menu featuring seafood salad, spinach and pancetta cream soup, roast beef and a panna cotta dessert.

Select menu items also have souvenir upgrade options. The milk mousse can be purchased with a jubilee mug, and the cheesecake can be purchased with a plate. A new popcorn bucket design features anniversary illustrations. For a full list of food souvenirs, refer to the official website.
The Tokyo DisneySea Food & Wine Festival will also return on April 15. The annual event offers a range of limited-time gourmet items across the park.
Guests can explore new menus at locations ranging from snack carts to full-service restaurants. Highlights include duck confit from the New York Deli, meatballs with hashed beef sauce and macaroni and cheese at Hudson River Harvest and a baumkuchen tiramisu from Gondolier Snacks.
Cafe Portofino will serve a “tasting selection” set with a choice of squid arancini or seafood salad, paired with an Italian sparkling wine set. At Vulcania Restaurant, guests can choose between a set of spicy chicken wing dumplings or smoky mayonnaise shrimp, paired with a Hungarian and Spanish wine set. Carts scattered throughout the park will offer garlic scallop and butter-flavored popcorn during the event period.
The festival also has an extensive list of alcoholic options, such as sake cocktails from Waterside Terrace, rum and muscat cocktails at Casbah Food Court, sparkling wine at Mermaid Lagoon, pisco and tropical fruit cocktails at the Yucatan Base Camp Grill and Brooklyn lager from the New York Deli. Inspired by the Pixar film Ratatouille, guests can find exciting Remy-themed dishes and activities. Children who come to dine at select restaurants can receive Remy chef hats and stickers. The American Waterfront area will have live performances from “The Groovy Jammin’ Chefs” who will play a mix of classic Disney songs — and may be joined by Remy himself as a special guest.
The Food & Wine Festival will run until June 30.
Merchandise
The celebration also features exclusive merchandise to mark the occasion. Items include plush toys of characters dressed in their anniversary costumes, new headbands and apparel, and handheld flags for guests to wave with others throughout the park.
Visitors can also create their own jubilee badge by selecting a badge base, ribbon attachment, charm and strap as a memento of their trip.
