The Strokes and L’Arc-en-Ciel are set to headline Summer Sonic this year. The first lineup — organizers will name more acts later — was announced earlier this week. Other big names to look out for at Summer Sonic 2026 include the groovy British acid jazz and funk band Jamiroquai, led by charismatic singer Jay Kay, South Korean pop idol Jennie from the hugely successful K-pop group Blackpink and David Byrne, the former frontman of the Talking Heads.
Britpop legends Suede are on the list along with Leicester’s most famous rock band, Kasabian. Vietnamese-American multi-instrumentalist Keshi will be bringing his lo-fi hip-hop sound to the event besides visionary British artist FKA Twigs, American a cappella group Pentatonix and the Irish rock band Florence Road. There will also be several high-profile Japanese acts performing in Chiba and Osaka. L’Arc-en-Ciel aside, the biggest name on the list is arguably the critically acclaimed rock band Sakanaction. Fellow rock group Suchmos will only be performing in Chiba.

Summer Sonic 2026: The Headliners
This year marks the 25th anniversary of The Strokes’ seminal debut album, Is This It. Featuring tracks like “The Modern Age,” “Last Nite” and “Someday,” it was named the best album of 2001 by Billboard, CMJ, Entertainment Weekly, NME and Time. The band went on to release two more LPs, Room on Fire (2003) and First Impressions of Earth (2005), before going on a five-year hiatus. Three more have followed since, including The New Abnormal in 2020, which won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Formed in Osaka in 1991 by bassist Tetsuya and vocalist Hyde, L’Arc-en-Ciel have reportedly sold more than 40 million records. A hugely influential visual kei band, they’ve had seven number one studio albums and 21 number one singles in Japan. In 2012, they became the first Japanese band to sell out Madison Square Garden in New York. Famous tracks include “Driver’s High,” “Honey” and “Ready Steady Go.”

Summer Sonic’s Origins
Creativeman Productions CEO Naoki Shimizu established Summer Sonic in 2000 with one half of the event debuting at Yamanashi Prefecture’s Fuji-Q Highland amusement park and the other in Osaka. The opening weekend was headlined by Green Day and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Other big names included James Brown and Weezer, while lower down the list were up-and-coming bands like Muse, Sigur Rós and Coldplay. The following year, the festival was moved from Yamanashi to Chiba.
Summer Sonic is held concurrently at Chiba’s Makuhari Messe and Osaka’s Expo ’70 Commemorative Park. This year, it will run for three days instead of two, starting on August 14. See here for information regarding tickets.
