Art of a New Era

The Prism of the Real exhibition at the National Art Center Tokyo examines and showcases more than 50 artists from Japan and abroad, looking at both art that emerged from Japan and how Japanese culture has inspired the world between 1989 and 2010.

This time period represents a transition from the Showa era into the Heisei era. These two decades saw the end of the Cold War and the push for globalization with more movement of people, goods and information. Through this time, artists also reflected the socio-cultural currents around them to inspire their work. Featured artists include Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Mariko Mori, Miran Fukuda, Kenji Yanobe, Tatsuo Miyajima and many more.

The exhibit starts with an introduction of internationalization in the 1980s, followed by a surge of artistic activity after 1989. The exhibition also takes a look at artistic practices that interrogate issues of identity, gender and traditional hierarchy.

Tickets are available at the National Art Center Tokyo from September 3, and online from August 20.
