Craftsmanship Carefully Folded Into Every Design

Issey Miyake was a Japanese fashion designer renowned for innovative, technology-driven designs. As a survivor of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima, Miyake integrated his experiences into his work, research and advocacy.

The “Issey Miyake: Folded Forms, Formed Reflections” exhibition focuses on the “folding structures” that are the foundation of clothing construction with a multifaceted introduction of the 132 5. brand’s creative approach. The exhibit will tour in Tokyo at the Cube Issey Miyake store in Ginza from September 1 to November 11, and in Osaka at the Issey Miyake Semba Creation Space from September 1 to November 7.

132 5. Issey Miyake is a brand that was created in 2010 from the collaboration between Issey Miyake and the Reality Lab team based on the principle of exploring “tomorrow’s manufacturing.” The brand combines sustainable materials with the structural principles of three-dimensional origami folding to create new new techniques in garment construction that are both environmental and also visually interesting.

The exhibit will have installations, videos and other materials to visualize the fold designs that are implemented into garments. The exhibition will also go over the process of recycling raw materials into thread, fabric and new clothing, and review the history of techniques cultivated in collaboration with artisans all over Japan.
