The 2013 Tokyo Filmex Film Festival will kick off this Saturday with an opening ceremony at the Asahi Hall in Yurakucho.

The ceremony will be followed by a screening of the opening film, a China and Japan co-production from director Zhangke Jia, A Touch of Sin. The festival, now in its 14th year, will run through until the following Sunday with daily screenings across several cinemas in the Yurakucho area.

The Filmex lineup consists of a Competition Section in which 10 films made by emerging filmmakers from across Asia will compete for the festival’s grand prize. The Special Screenings section is a showcase for films from all over the world, including the winner of The Cannes Un Certain Regard Best Film prize and this festival’s closing film The Missing Picture. Telling the story of its Cambodian director’s life under the Pol Pot regime through scenes recreated using clay figures, it’s one to watch. One of the best features of Filmex is their Special Programs where they take one filmmaker or a group of filmmakers from a particular country and focus on their work. This year sees two classic directors under the spotlight, France’s Jean Grémillon and the Japanese director Noboru Nakamura in memory of the centennial anniversary of his birth. Nakamura’s films will be shown at the Human Trust Cinema in Yurakucho until December 6th, so don’t miss this excellent opportunity to catch the works of a great director complete with English subtitles.

Tokyo Filmex are known for bringing together a broad mix of moving and artistic films from all over the world and Japanese gems you might otherwise miss. For a chance to see a great work of art or maybe even the next great filmmaker make sure to stop by over the coming week.
