Located in the heart of Shibuya, on the 15th floor of the imposing Espace tower, Legato is one of the standouts of the Global Dining restaurant chain. The atmosphere is chic, with an updated old-world interior that is offset by the breathtaking view of the Tokyo skyline from the floor-to-ceiling windows surrounding the dining and bar area. But even if you show up without a reservation and end up with a table in the middle, one of the best panoramic views of Shibuya can be seen from the elevator on the way up to the restaurant.

Whether the plan is for a candlelit dinner for two or a large party, there are rooms and tables to compliment the mood. If the sunken main dining room doesn’t suit your needs, there are smaller private rooms surrounding this, with the most impressive room even featuring a live pianist. The bar and lounge area, which is staffed by very friendly and knowledgeable bartenders and sommeliers who are always happy to make cocktail and wine recommendations, is a fabulous area for enjoying an aperitif or two before your meal.

But as important as ambiance and service are, the food at Legato also warrants mentioning. The menu includes indulgent Western favorites like foie gras, lobster fettuccine, and stewed lamb, interspersed with a few Japanese ‘fusion’ dishes such as sashimi of the day and tuna and avocado tartare. None of these disappoint, but be sure to ask about the daily specials as well, because you may just find there’s something even better than the popular mainstays on offer.

Legato, with its swanky interior and delicious food, can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Call first for a reservation, and ask for a table by the window to get the best view.
