United States President Donald Trump no longer requires Japan, Australia, South Korea and NATO to send warships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. That is according to his latest post on the Truth Social platform. The president was especially critical of NATO, saying, “We will protect them, but they will do nothing for us.”
Trump Says the US Doesn’t Need the Assistance of Allies
He added that because the US has had such military success, it no longer requires or desires the assistance of NATO members. “WE NEVER DID,” he said. “Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea. In fact, speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the Most Powerful Country Anywhere in the World, WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE!”
The about-face comes just a few days after he called on US allies to deploy ships to the Strait of Hormuz to help secure the key Middle Eastern shipping route. The request was met with resistance. “This is not our war; we did not start it,” was German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’ response.
“We will not be drawn into the wider war,” said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Despite these comments, Trump stated on Monday that “numerous countries” had told him “they’re on the way.” He added that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio would provide a list of those nations. Thus far, no list has been released.

Japan Cautious Ahead of Takaichi Meeting With Trump
Japan has been cautious in its response. “We have not made any decisions whatsoever about dispatching escort ships,” Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told parliament on Monday. “We are continuing to examine what Japan can do independently and what can be done within the legal framework.” She added that she will convey Japan’s views on the Middle East situation to Trump when they meet this week.
Takaichi is due to meet Trump in Washington on Thursday for her first formal visit to the US since taking office. The leaders are expected to reaffirm the alliance partnership on security and economic cooperation, though escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are likely to dominate the talks. Following Trump’s recent post, the atmosphere could be tense.
