Thirty-six Mumbai policemen have been suspended for ‘taking bribes’ after being caught in the act on camera.
Kasam Khan said he installed a video camera when policemen asked him for bribes while he was carrying out building work at a friend’s home in the Nehru Nagar area. Some of the policemen threatened to frame him for building illegal extensions unless he paid the bribery money.
The footage, recorded over a two week period in March, showed the policemen accepting between 50 and 150 rupees (92 cents to $2.75) from Khan.
Khan then submitted the footage to a senior police official. The 36 policemen were suspended with immediate effect and the anti-corruption bureau has filed a complaint against them, reports The Times of India.
Mumbai’s police chief Satyapal Singh called the case “shameful for the entire force” and assured that action would be taken against those found guilty.
The mass suspension is the latest corruption case in Maharashtra state after 74 people were killed in a recent building collapse. A large number of buildings built in and around Mumbai are believed to have been built illegally through bribes.
