See Thousands of Fireflies at a Local Festival

The 29th annual Kugayama Firefly Festival will return to Suginami Ward along the Kanda River and Tamagawa Aqueduct.

The Kugayama Festival is one of the most popular events for hotaru gari, or firefly viewing. Around 2,000-3,000 fireflies glow in a magical spectacle, ringing in the summer season.

During the daytime, numerous stalls will be set up in Chuo Ryokuchi Park. The streets will be filled with live performances, workshops and local vendors selling festival foods like yakitori, beer and sweets. There will also be a fun firefly stamp rally to encourage visitors to explore the neighborhood. Collect six stamps for a chance to win exciting prizes. Workshops include a firefly drawing class, a kids’ gardening experience and a kaleidoscope making class.

The festival has various firefly viewing locations. At the Kanda River and Tamagawa Aqueduct, fireflies will be freely flying around. At Kugayama Hall, Kugayama Inari Shrine, Kitaguchi Shopping Street (inside Jumbo Denki) and Miyashitabashi Park, guests can see fireflies up close in net cages.
