Relive Heisei Love
Roppongi Museum’s new “Heisei Ren-Ai,” or Heisei Romance, exhibition will explore the nostalgic after-school days of the past.
Japan’s Heisei era ran from 1989 to 2019. The exhibition will traces the love stories of approximately 30 years of the Heisei era, told through over 3000 displayed items. The venue will recreate school classrooms, Tsutaya stores and other spaces from that era. With the theme of romance, the exhibit will display various formats of love communication and friendship devices, such as pagers, diaries, flip phones, MDs (MiniDiscs) and sticker albums — which are also making a recent return in popularity.

Guests can also try some hands-on displays, such as writing love letters, taking mirror selfies, writing texts on flip phones and using the popular Snow app filters.
A pop-up shop will feature character goods and stationery from the Heisei era, as well as a purikura photo booth, an essential part of after-school memories.
