Shinnosuke Abe resigned as manager of the Yomiuri Giants on Tuesday following his arrest over an altercation with his daughter. The 47-year-old, who spent his entire 19-year career with the Giants, was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly grabbing his 18-year-old daughter and forcing her to the floor at their home in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward. He announced his resignation to reporters at the Giants’ office.
“I have caused a great deal of trouble for many baseball fans and the company because of my family issues,” said Abe. He added, “I have also tarnished the reputation that comes with managing the historic Giants, and I want to express my deepest apologies.” During the press conference, a lawyer also read a letter from Abe’s eldest daughter addressed to the media.
Daughter Says Reports She Was Hit and Kicked Are ‘Untrue’
“I broke down in tears seeing my father apprehended,” she wrote, adding that she was not injured and that she and her father had reconciled, so “please do not worry.” She said that she was ashamed that it escalated into such a big issue and that it was the first time they had had a fight of that magnitude, but reports that he had hit or kicked her were “untrue.”
Abe was apparently trying to mediate a fight between his two daughters. He was taken into custody following a report from a local child guidance center. His eldest daughter allegedly contacted the center after consulting ChatGPT. She has asked people “to please refrain as much as possible from the slander, online attacks and public shaming” directed at her family, father and herself.

Abe, who played his entire professional career with the Giants, was one of only three players in NPB history with 2,000 career hits and 400 home runs. He retired in 2019 with a .284 batting average, 2,132 hits, 406 home runs and 1,285 RBIs. Ahead of the 2024 season, he succeeded Tatsunori Hara as manager of the Giants. In his first year, he led the team to a Central League pennant.
