Discover UNESCO-recognized papercraft traditions and glowing historic streets in Gifu

This October, the Fairfield by Marriott Michi-no-Eki Project invites guests to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Mino City, home to over 1,300 years of papermaking tradition. Famous for its exquisite hand-molded Hon-Mino-shi paper — designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage — the historic town offers a rare look at timeless Japanese craftsmanship.

The experience takes place in a 270-year-old preserved merchant house nestled in Mino’s historic Udatsu Wall district. Partnering with Ishikawa Paper Goods, a historic workshop founded in 1902, participants will learn about the region’s papermaking heritage before crafting their own artisan souvenir. Guided by experienced staff, guests can choose to make a roly-poly paper doll, a pen holder or a decorative paper plate using colorful Mino washi.

After the workshop, guests are free to wander the historic district during the magical Mino Washi Akari Art Exhibition. Softly illuminated paper lantern sculptures fill the preserved streets, transforming the town into a glowing open-air gallery. Visitors can also browse the workshop’s retail shop for handmade paper goods and gifts before returning to the hotel.

It’s an inspiring opportunity to connect with local artisans, learn about a UNESCO-recognized craft and experience the warm, enchanting atmosphere of Mino at night.
