Centered on the 100-year history of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Japan’s first public art museum which opened in 1926, this exhibition presents creative work nurtured across three distinct places: Ueno in Tokyo, Omuta in Fukuoka, and Buenos Aires in Argentina.
Paintings, prints, photographs and archival material trace the museum’s own history, alongside roughly 400 works by painter Shigeo Egami, who continually depicted the landscapes of Omuta.
The exhibition also draws on works and documents to explore how art shaped the lives of migrants, following the museum’s first-ever acquired work, “Garden of Zinnias,” and the story of a Japanese family who emigrated to Buenos Aires.
