Learn the art of seasonal wagashi in this exclusive hotel guest workshop
This autumn in Yabu City, the Fairfield by Marriott Michi-no-Eki Project invites travelers to explore local culture through a hands-on Japanese sweet-making workshop. The event takes place at Kashin Tanitsune — a historic shop in Hyogo Prefecture’s Tajima region that has practiced the craft of traditional confectionery for over 150 years.
Working directly under the guidance of master artisans, participants will learn to shape jo-namagashi, delicate traditional sweets freshly crafted to reflect the changing seasons. The class focuses on two autumnal designs: “Momiji,” which mimics the bright red leaves shrouding the surrounding mountains, and “Kuri Kinton,” a seasonal confection made with sweet chestnuts.
Framed by the vibrant changing colors of the surrounding mountains, guests will sample their hand-made confections in a relaxed tasting session. The morning wraps up with time to browse the shop’s famous regional specialties — including sweets that have earned national awards and been presented to Japan’s royal family.
It’s a rare opportunity to step inside a working culinary tradition, taste authentic regional flavors and experience the tranquility and stunning beauty of the Japanese countryside.
