Enter the Creative Mind of Director Mamoru Hosoda

Creative Museum Tokyo will host “The Creative Origins of Mamoru Hosoda” exhibition from June 20 to August 31.

Commemorating the 20th anniversary of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, the exhibit will go through Hosoda’s career and creative process. The exhibit will also cover Hosoda’s independent animation and live-action film projects as a student, his oil paintings from his time at Kanazawa College of Art and his formative experiences in his hometown of Toyama.

The exhibition will feature the largest ever display of production materials — including storyboards, layouts, original drawings and art boards, focusing on various Hosoda works including The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars and Wolf Children. Fans can go behind-the-scenes to see how iconic scenes were created, and all of the painstaking sketches and artwork necessary to make an animated film.

In celebration of the exhibition, the Creative Museum Tokyo will also host a pop-up OZ cafe with a special limited menu from June 20 to August 31. The cafe will feature dishes inspired by “OZ,” the virtual world from the movie Summer Wars, as well as other original dishes based on memorable scenes and characters from Mamoru Hosoda’s works. Dishes include pastas and float drinks representing OZ Tower, and desserts inspired by King Kazuma. These colorful offerings are a great way to continue the experience inside Hosoda’s creative world.

For every ¥3000 spent at the cafe, guests will receive one sticker featuring artwork from the exhibition.
