The 14th annual Japanese Stationery Awards, also known as the Stationery Store Awards, have crowned the best of the best in innovative design and functionality for 2026. Whether you’re a devoted stationery connoisseur or a casual collector, the Stationery Awards includes something for everyone.
The winners were selected out of approximately 1,200 nominations, all items that were released within the past year. Products are rigorously judged by a panel of industry professionals and staff from famous stationery stores across the country including Loft and Tsutaya Bookstore.
With so many different types of stationery goods and accessories, the Stationery Awards highlight a variety of products — with different categories ranging from the best mechanical pencils and the best masking tapes, to the overall best original idea. Grand Prize – Laconic Solid Write
The coveted Grand Prize was awarded to Laconic for their Solid Write mechanical pencil model. As Judge Chairman Takagi Yoshinori points out on the announcement page, Lanonic does not specialize in writing instruments, yet they have managed to create a beautifully crafted pencil. The pencil is an extension of the brand’s Zen-inspired manufacturing — with a low center of gravity, cooling grip and a hexagonal ring that prevents the pencil from rolling away. The pencil is also only available in jet black, creating a minimalistic but refined presence.

Idea Award – Sunstar Stationery UFO Flat Pouch
Sunstar Stationery seems to be on a galactic fixation right now, with multiple award-winning alien-themed goods in their recent collections. Their current shining star is the UFO Flat Pouch, which won the Idea Award before it was even officially released. The pencil case has a whimsical design that mimics an alien abduction, complete with a floating cow as the zipper charm.
The neon palette complements Heisei retro revival trends and its light-hearted concept offers a bit of humorous escape from the unstable world.

Design Award – Sakura Cray-Pas Komagoma A4 File
The Komagoma file became a hot topic on social media as a convenient storage method for students and adults alike. The file is compact when closed, but the fanning pocket design creates complete visibility of the inside contents. The file can also stand up on its own for easy access.

Functionality Award – Pilot Frixion Synergy 3
The Pilot Frixion Synergy 3 pen combines the ultra-fine 0.4 millimeter Synergy tip with erasable Frixion ink in three colors. With the recent boom in planner popularity, the Frixion Synergy is a handy tool for small notes.

Pencil Case Award – Sunstar Stationery Cicada Shell Pencil Case
Sunstar Stationery loves a quirky theme. Like the previously introduced UFO pencil case, the Cicada pen case has a distinctive shell design that provides fun and plenty of storage room. You can choose from a variety of cicada colors, available in the traditional brown, but also the bold pink, violet and mint. The case is also self-standing and has a built-in carabiner to attach it to backpacks.

Desktop Storage Award – Sonic Digitox The Routine Smartphone Time Lock Case
For those that need some intervention from your doomscrolling addiction, the Digitox Smartphone Lock Case helps to improve concentration by physically locking your phone away. The case offers two lock modes. The Routine Lock automatically locks your phone on repeat, and the Timer Lock temporarily restricts distractions for a set period.
Pens and Erasers

Fountain Pen Award – Sailor Profit Casual L
Fountain pens carry a natural sophistication and luxury. The Profit Casual L pen features a stainless steel nib and meticulous hand finishing.
The Profit series has been Sailor’s signature line since 1981. This model delivers a smooth writing performance comparable to high-end gold nib fountain pens, but at a cost-effective price point. The nib and accent points have gold ion plating for extra detailing.

Eraser Award – Seed Kadoloop
The Seed Kadoloop reimagines the classic eraser with innovative technology to elevate it. The eraser is “self-reshaping” — it can quickly be remolded with heat to restore its edges. This function is great for students and artists who require precision erasing.
To reshape the eraser, all you need to do is gently warm the product using a hairdryer or warm water. Once it’s softened, simply place it in the included mold to bring back those sharp corners.
Paper Goods

Letter Award – Midori Mogu Mogu Letter Set
“Mogu mogu” is a Japanese onomatopoeia that describes the sound of chewing. Midori’s Mogu Mogu Letter Set features adorable animals and their favorite foods: dogs with kibble and bones, cats with fish, rabbits with strawberries and hamsters with seeds.
Each set includes six sheets of letter paper, three envelopes and one sticker sheet. The sticker sheet has large animal illustrations that make them look like they are lying on top of the letter.

Notebook Award – Daigo Cafe Notebook
For the stationery aficionados who also enjoy cafe-hopping, Daigo’s Tea Time Record Notebook is the perfect accompaniment. The notebook has a pretty simple design, but is specifically designed for documenting cafe visits with space to record coffee ratings, the menu and initial impressions.
Daigo also makes a cinephile version to write down your movie reviews like your own personal analog Letterboxd.
Cutting Tools

Cutter Award – Plus Pico Friends Box Cutter
The Pico Friend box cutter adds safety and charm to the cardboard cutting experience. Unlike traditional box cutters, the Plus design securely fastens its rust-resistant ceramic blade inside a soft silicone cover to prevent any accidents.
The handle is designed to look like arctic animals belly-sliding across your box — choose from a seal, polar bear or baby penguin. The plump animal design is not only insanely cute, their round shape adds to the ergonomic grip.

Ishimaru Bunkyodo Award – Sunstar Stationery Cassette Tape Measure
The Sunstar cassette-tape-shaped measuring tape brilliantly stores a 1.5 meter ruler in a nostalgic way. The compact tape is about the size of an actual cassette, and comes in cool ombre colorways. With the included clasp, the tape can be fashionably attached to bags or even a belt loop.

Loft Award – Sunstar Stationery Fukimaru Tabletop Cleaner
After a long work or study session, your desktop can get quite messy with eraser shavings, paper bits and more. The Fukimaru Tabletop Cleaner functions like a miniature Swiffer. Simply attach tissue paper into the slots and wipe all of the residue off from your desk. The handle features cute cat figures that will surely motivate you to keep working hard. Designs come in four cat breeds, known in Japan as cha-tora, sabatora, hachiware and mike.
