Hatsumode and Joya no Kane
As part of the new year celebrations, hatsumode is a customary first visit of the year to a Shinto shrine or Buddhist temple to pray for good fortune and ward off bad omens for the year ahead. Usually, this means going to the local family shrine that has been already providing protection and blessings throughout the year. But, the more grand and famous shrines and temples are also popular spots to participate in new year’s prayers.
