Two of Japan’s most recognizable words around the world are “kabuki” and “kawaii.” Now Sanrio is bringing the two together with Kawaii Kabuki, a full-scale musical starring Hello Kitty and friends.

The full name of the spectacle is Kawaii Kabuki: Momotaro by the Hello Kitty Troupe, and it’s created in collaboration with leading kabuki promotor Shochiku and directed, written and conducted by Kensuke Yokoichi, who says it can be enjoyed by both children and adults.

The kabuki musical, also designed to appeal to an international audience, marks the first time kabuki will be performed at Sanrio Puroland, the Sanrio theme park in Tama, Tokyo.

Shido Nakamura, an actor who performs in the show, says, “Sanrio characters are beloved by generations of fans, and I have been very fond of them since my childhood, so this is a rare and delightful experience.”
