M’s Pop Life Department, a seven-story-high sex shop in Tokyo’s Akihabara area, gets 1,000 visitors per day on weekdays, and 1,500 on Saturdays and Sundays. The store first opened in Ueno in 2001 and then moved that same year to Akihabara. Since then, M’s has opened seven other locations around the country, including two other ones in Tokyo: one in Ikebukuro, and another in Tachikawa. But it is the flagship store that by now has become a mainstay of Japan’s capital, attracting not only people from all over the country, but also the world. It stocks everything from sex toys and dolls to lingerie and cosplay costumes.
