Tokyo’s tallest building and newest landmark the “Sky Tree” is set to start test broadcasts says the building’s owner Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co.

The Sky Tree, completed earlier this year will replace the aging Tokyo Tower as the city’s main broadcasting center.

NHK, one of Japan’s largest broadcaster will begin testing radio transmissions this month ahead of the official switch on in early 2012. NHK will start more powerful broadcasts in December which will be visible as test patterns on regular televisions. Full broadcasting will begin in 2012.

At a height of 634 meters Sky Tree will be the tallest structure in Japan and one of the highest TV towers in Asia.

Designers say the building will resist even the largest of earthquakes.
