Fukuro-Matsuri

Fukuro Matsuri and Tokyo Yosakoi 2019

Dance, Markets & Festivals, Traditional Events

A traditional local festival and yosakoi dance contest split over two weekends. Ikebukuro’s Fukuro Matsuri (‘Owl festival’) originated in the late 1960s as a way to promote the area’s shopping district but has since grown into a large scale event taking over the entire neighborhood for two separate weekends. Taiko drumming, traditional dances, musical performances, yosakoi teams, mikoshi parades and street vendors – the festival has all the usual traditional matsuri flavor and more. Check the website close to the date (Japanese only) for a full itinerary and performance times for all four days.
