One of the Three Great Summer Festivals
The annual Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine festival, also known as the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival, will be held from August 12 to August 16.
The festival is believed to date back to 1642 and is considered one of the “three great festivals of Edo” (currently Tokyo). Throughout the event, people splash purifying water on mikoshi, or portable shrines, lending the event its nickname of the “water-splashing festival.” Shrine-bearers and spectators alike create a special, playful energy at this festival.
This year marks the year of the main festival, which is held only once every three years. During this special occasion, the Hachimangu Shrine’s sacred palanquin is carried in procession from each neighborhood. The large procession will take place on August 16.

- Evening festival procession (6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.)

- Children’s procession (10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)
- Adult procession (1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)

- Main festival joint procession (6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
