What Are Fukubukuro?
The countdown to the new year is almost upon us, and with it — lucky bag shopping season. Fukubukuro are a yearly retail tradition. Combining the kanji for fuku (福, meaning “good fortune”) and fukuro (袋, meaning “bag”) to create “lucky bags,” fukubukuro come in all shapes, sizes and categories from snacks to luxury brands. Shops fill the bags with a variety of products — adding up to a higher value than what the bags are sold for. It’s a good way to clear some inventory, and thank customers for another year of fruitful business with discounts and gifts.
Traditionally, these lucky bags are supposed to be a mystery. Shoppers take a gamble not knowing what exactly they are buying; but the fun is in unboxing and seeing the surprise contents inside. Recently, fukubukuro have started to show previews or fully revealing their inner treasures to customers beforehand. Sometimes fukubukuro even have original items produced exclusively for the lucky bags.
With so many lucky bags to choose from, here’s our guide to some of the most popular fukubukuro — and how to hunt for them.

Jins
Pre-order Nov. 6 – Dec. 14
Jins eyewear has a unique take on the fukubukuro. Instead of a lucky bag filled with different goodies, Jins takes inspiration from pochibukuro, money envelopes gifted during New Years. The Jins lucky envelope (¥6,600) contains either a ¥10,000 or ¥14,000 coupon that is valid from January 1 to March 1, 2026. A creative design — the coupon is actually printed on an eyeglass cleaning cloth. When you’re ready to redeem your coupon towards new glasses, present your lucky cleaning cloth and Jins staff will cut off the voucher part. Do not cut the cloth yourself as that will invalidate the voucher.
On top of the voucher, the lucky cloth also entitles you to two offers that can be used for a whole year: ¥2,026 off your bill and 10% off a companion’s purchase. These discounts can both be used unlimited times during the event period from January 1 to December 31, 2026, limited to one offer per transaction per day.
