Sometimes I need a healthy dose of vegetables to supplement the mainly carb and fish diet that has become de facto since living in Tokyo, and one of my favorite places to get them is Vegematto, a tiny 14-seat bar in Roppongi that happens to serve some of the best vegetable cuisine in Tokyo.
The glass case at the bar showcases the ingredients that will be used to prepare your meal: bright orange carrots, plump turnips, deep purple eggplant, stalks of broccoli.
The food at Vegematto is fresh, simple, well-seasoned and well-cooked. While a la carte is available, the chef’s courses, starting at 3500 yen per person are a good deal and include a parade of fresh, marinated, fried, grilled and steamed vegetables, concluded with a rice course served with delicious miso soup and Japanese pickles.
Open during the night owl hours of 7 pm – 7 am, Vegematto is delicious for dinner or a late-night post-drinking alternative to ramen!
