Len Kawahara wasn’t looking to discover a centuries-old skincare secret. A few years ago, she was working on a screenplay, exhaustively researching the life of ukiyo-e master Hokusai. Immersed in Edo-period culture and its everyday rituals, she found herself drawn to historical accounts of traditional remedies. Among them, she discovered a handwritten recipe that blended sake and yuzu citrus — a simple concoction believed to have been created by the painter himself, said to have eased his symptoms following a stroke.

Curiosity led her to recreate the formula at home, and what started as part of her film research soon became something more like a personal experiment. When she applied the blend to her own skin, she says she immediately felt effects. “I was surprised at how fast the formula absorbed into my skin — and how soft and supple the skin became afterward,” she tells TW.
