Ride the Ferry to Kitakyushu’s Cat Heaven of Ainoshima

By Weekender Editor

The island of Ainoshima off the coast of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture has become a destination for those seeking feline friends. This cat lover’s paradise is a small, remote island with a population of 218 people – and about the same number of cats. Experience rural fishermen life accompanied by the friendly local felines at one of Japan’s famous cat islands. The island is only accessible by a 35-minute ferry ride. Board the ferry at Kokura Port, a five-minute walk from JR Kokura Station.
