Sanja Matsuri

A spectacular traditional Japanese festival that lives up to its wild and crazy reputation, this one is not to be missed! Centered around Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine, Sanja Matsuri happens over three days, with the main festivities taking place over the weekend. This legendary matsuri is considered one of the three Great Festivals of Edo, and sees hundreds of teams of Ujiko (local neighborhood residents) parade heavily decorated mikoshi (portable shrines) through the streets, showing their passion and teamwork as they cheer and endure their heavy burdens. Expect high spirits, raw energy and very large crowds!
