Top-Ranked Sumo Wrestlers Gather in Hyogo For a Full Day of Ringside Action
Sumo fans — and anyone curious about Japan’s national sport — can soon experience the thrill of professional sumo up close as the Grand Sumo Winter Tour arrives in Amagasaki on Friday, December 12, 2025. Unlike official tournaments, regional tours are intimate, community-centred exhibitions that bring spectators right into the heart of the action. Visitors can watch morning practice, see the dramatic ring-entering ceremonies, enjoy Makuuchi bouts from just metres away and witness the graceful Yumitori-shiki bow-twirling finale.
These tours are designed to be welcoming to newcomers, families and international audiences. Clear explanations, cultural demonstrations — including sumo hairdressing and the comedic shokkiri performance — help visitors understand the rituals behind each moment. For this Amagasaki edition, multilingual earphone guides in English and Chinese, as well as Tamari VIP seating have also been prepared to make the experience even more accessible.
Whether it’s your first encounter with sumo or a chance to see top-ranked rikishi (wrestlers) outside the Tokyo tournament season, this one-day event offers a rare, close-up look at Japan’s national sport.
