Overview of Higashi Chaya District
Established in 1820, when geisha houses scattered across central Kanazawa were consolidated into three designated districts, the Higashi Chaya District is the largest of Kanazawa’s three well-preserved historical geisha districts — alongside Nishichayagai and Kazuemachi — and geisha still entertain here today.
Traditional Japanese wooden houses line the streets, preserving the atmosphere of the period when Kanazawa prospered as a wealthy castle town from the 17th to 19th centuries. Its beauty and elegant atmosphere are even compared to Kyoto. The geisha houses are distinguished by beautiful latticed bay windows on the outer side of the first floor, called “kimusuko,” with Japanese-style guestrooms on the second floor. During the Edo period, the construction of two-story buildings was prohibited except for geisha houses, making their appearance all the more striking.
These historical geisha houses, along with Kyoto’s Gion and Kanazawa’s Kazuemachi, have been designated as Japanese cultural assets — no other geisha districts in Japan share this distinction.
Today, many of the former teahouses have been converted into cafes, craft shops and galleries. Gold leaf is a Kanazawa specialty, and visitors can try applying real gold leaf to accessories such as chopsticks, wooden boxes, and jewelry boxes at select stores. Nearby, the Kanazawa Yasue Gold Leaf Museum displays articles collected by famous gold-leaf artisan Komei Yasue, including gold-beating tools, folding screens, Noh costumes and Kutaniyaki ceramics.
Best Times To Visit Higashi Chaya District
Along the Asano River that flows through the district, cherry trees bloom beautifully in spring, making late March through early April one of the most picturesque times to visit. Autumn brings another visual highlight, with the surrounding Higashiyama hillside turning rich shades of amber and red from October through November.
Winter offers its own serene and dreamlike beauty, with the teahouse district often dusted in snow.
The area can get crowded, especially on weekends and during peak tourist seasons. If you prefer to explore at a more leisurely pace, it’s best to avoid the New Year holidays and late July through August. Arriving early on weekday mornings — before the shops open around 10:00 — is a reliable way to enjoy the atmosphere without the crowds.
