Katsurahama Beach Overview
Katsurahama Beach is one of the most celebrated scenic spots in Kochi Prefecture, located on the southern coast of Shikoku Island at the mouth of Urado Bay. The beach stretches roughly 500 meters in a graceful arc between Cape Ryuzu and Cape Ryo, framed by lush green pine groves and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
The area has drawn visitors for centuries, long revered as one of Japan’s finest spots to view the full moon. This reputation is immortalized in the lyrics of the yosakoi bushi, a beloved Kochi folk song that references Katsurahama as the premier moon-viewing destination in the region.
Dominating the east end of the beach is the iconic bronze statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, the Kochi-born samurai hero who played a pivotal role in ending Japan’s feudal age and ushering in the Meiji era. Standing 5.3 meters tall atop a base that brings the total height to 13.5 meters, Ryoma gazes out over the Pacific with quiet resolve. The statue was funded and erected in 1928 by a group of local youths eager to honor their hometown hero. The site where the statue stands was once the location of Urado Castle, built by Chosokabe Motochika in 1591 — today, the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum occupies the hilltop grounds.
The broader area is designated Katsurahama Park, which includes the Katsurahama Aquarium — one of Japan’s oldest, first opened in 1931 — as well as the Umi no Terrace shopping and dining complex, recently renovated. While the beach itself is free to enter, note that swimming is strictly prohibited due to powerful waves and strong currents.
Best Times To Visit Katsurahama Beach
Spring (March through May) and autumn (September through November) offer the most pleasant conditions for exploring the park on foot, with mild temperatures and clearer skies making for ideal coastal strolls. April and May are especially popular, as a temporary observation deck is installed beside the Ryoma statue during those months to commemorate his birthday.
Autumn is perhaps the most atmospheric season of all. On nights when the full moon rises over the Pacific, Katsurahama takes on a magical quality — a scene that has captivated visitors since ancient times and continues to draw moon-viewing enthusiasts each year.
